How it works: Step-By-Step to ISO 45001 Certification
Your journey begins with a free consultation. This is an opportunity for us to discuss your requirements and objectives and how ISO 45001 certification can benefit your business. We will provide an overview of our process, costs, timelines, and what to expect as we move forward.
The first step is for us to carry out a gap analysis. The gap analysis will represent a ‘walk-through’ of your existing processes and procedures and compare them with ISO 45001 standard requirements.
This activity reveals potential gaps or weaknesses so we can take action and get you audit-ready. It’s also a good introduction to the audit process and allows your team to understand what the formal audit will entail.
Based on the gap analysis findings, we will develop a comprehensive suite of bespoke processes and documents forming your quality management system that reflects your organisation’s operations and commitment to safe, healthy and sustainable work.
For your OH&SMS to be effective, employees must understand how to utilise the management system. We will ensure you and your team are well-versed in new processes and procedures.
After implementing your new management system, we will conduct a certification audit in-person or remotely to confirm alignment with the ISO 45001 standard requirements within your organisation.
Throughout the audit, the approach taken by assessors is designed to provide “added value” by being open, helpful, and pragmatic.
After completing the audit, the assessor will hold a meeting with you to discuss any findings. If there are no major deficiencies, you will be issued the ISO 45001 certification.
Your certificate will be valid for three years after the issue date, before which you must recertify.
Achieving ISO 45001 certification is a significant milestone, but the journey towards a safer workplace and maintained compliance doesn’t end there.
Our support extends beyond the certification audit to ensure your organisation thrives. ISO support is optional and flexible to meet your needs; typically, support consists of assisting you with meeting the requirements to conduct internal audits and management reviews and keep your documentation current.

Once you have achieved certification, the three-year certification cycle begins. We will establish a program of mandatory routine surveillance audits arranged annually and a recertification audit in year 3.
The objective of surveillance audits is to verify that your systems and processes continue to be maintained, effectively implemented and compliant with the ISO 45001 Standard.
Typical surveillance audit activities include:
- internal audits and management review reports
- close out of outstanding findings from the previous audit
- non-conformance, corrective and preventive action processes
- management of changes and the effectiveness of their implementation
- health and safety monitoring
- risk assessments and safe systems of work
- review of health and safety objectives
- incident and investigation management

Frequently asked questions
ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). This standard specifies requirements for an organisation to create and maintain an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system.
The standard can be applied to any organisation regardless of its size, type and nature. It provides a framework for implementing policies, procedures, and processes to manage health and safety risks and opportunities and control its OH&S performance. The aim is to reduce the number of workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
Does your business strive to provide a safe and healthy work environment for its employees, contractors and other stakeholders? Do your existing and future clients require ISO 45001 certification as a pre-requisite to doing business?
If the answer is yes, then achieving ISO 45001 certification is the answer to achieving business excellence! Doing so demonstrates your dedication to workplace health and safety and can help improve OH&S performance, meet legal requirements and boost your reputation.
With the assistance of our ISO 45001 consultants, you can implement and maintain a health and safety management system with ease. Our consultants have the expertise and specialist knowledge necessary to provide the support you need, and their involvement can make a significant difference to the success of the implementation.
The length of time required to obtain ISO 45001 certification can vary depending on a number of factors, including the size and complexity of your business, the readiness of your health and safety management system, the availability of resources to support the implementation and certification process, and whether you want to integrate with other management standards etc.
Typically, we aim to certify our clients in 9 weeks or less.
For clients requiring UKAS-accredited certification, it can take between 3-6 months due to the complexity of the process and third-party certification bodies.
It is important to understand that obtaining certification for ISO 45001 is not a one-time event. Your business must undergo a mandatory 3-year certification cycle, during which surveillance audits will be conducted annually. In the 3rd year of the cycle, a recertification audit will be carried out.
ISO 45001 certification is valid for three years, after which you must undergo a recertification audit to maintain your Certification. Your business will also be required to undergo surveillance audits on an annual basis.
ISO 45001 certification is not mandatory, but it’s something many businesses opt to pursue as an effective way to demonstrate their commitment towards the Occupational Health and safety of employees and improve their OH&S performance.
It is also quite often a client requirement for tenders, contracts and public sector frameworks.
It’s important to note that in many cases, obtaining UKAS-accredited ISO certification is not mandatory and not for every business. Typically, non-accredited certification is more than sufficient.
Principal ISO does not directly offer ISO certification accredited by UKAS; however, we work in partnership with reputable third-party UKAS-accredited Bodies to provide you with consultancy services and support guiding you through the entire process of achieving UKAS ISO certification.
The certification process accredited by UKAS is significantly more expensive and time-consuming. Make sure you verify if this level of certification is necessary. We are always happy to talk with you to explain the requirements in more detail.
We can assist you in achieving and integrating various management system standards, such as ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 9001 for quality management.
We also offer expertise on other standards and accreditations such as Build Offsite Property Assurance Scheme (BOPAS), PAS 2060 Carbon Neutrality and more.
